Animal Support announces its support of the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and research of marine animals, both in the wild and under human care.

“The recent stories of dolphins being stranded in narrow waterways and being savagely mutilated off of the gulf coast absolutely disgusted and saddened us at Animal Support. We felt we had to do something to help the local authorities put an end to this senseless animal torture, as well as provide regional centers with much needed resources and sponsorship,” says Animal Support co-founder Julian Omidi. “The IMMS is a Gulf Coast center that provides wounded and sick marine animals with needed care, and we are thrilled to lend support to this wonderful facility.”

The IMMS (http://www.imms.org) began in 1984 as an educational resource for both public and private services needing information about the biology of marine life. The center offers expert medical care for injured marine mammals, as well as state of the art research facilities and funds for graduate students in the field of marine mammal science. Additionally, the IMMS also initiates periodic beach clean-ups, animal rescue and community outreach services for the purpose of instilling pride in Gulf Coast communities.

Animal Support also recently offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of anyone found deliberately harming Gulf Coast dolphins. In 2012, as many as eight dolphins have been found in the waters off Alabama and Louisiana having been shot or suffered stab wounds and other horrific injuries at the hands of cruel and thoughtless humans. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently conducting an investigation to arrest individuals or groups suspected of attacking wildlife. Dolphins in the gulf have been exceptionally vulnerable to illness and injury since the British Petroleum oil spill in 2010. The Gulf of Mexico is the largest dolphin population and habitat in the U.S. Since the oil spill 90% of oyster reefs are dead along with large numbers of turtles and dolphins.

Animal Support (http://www.animalsupport.org) is dedicated to addressing pet over-population and abuse by promoting charities working on behalf of animal well-being. The organization was founded by brothers Michael Omidi, M.D. and Julian Omidi to advocate for animal protection, rescue, adoption, and spay and neuter laws. Animal Support does not accept donations but encourages direct contributions of money and talents to the charities and organizations featured on our website.
