Animal Support Helps Pigeons & Doves Fly the Coop via Rescue & Adoption

(PRWEB) April 03, 2014

MickaCoo, a pigeon and dove rescue organization, is now receiving funding from Animal Support, a charity co-founded by Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi. Operating in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, MickaCoo saves the lives of domestic pigeons and doves by providing avian vet care, foster homes, and placement into non-breeding, not-sporting, forever homes.

Animal Support, co-founded by Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi, is a new supporter of MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue which saves domestic (unreleasable) birds that would otherwise be killed in San Francisco Bay Area animal shelters. In less than seven years, this volunteer-driven nonprofit has saved the lives of more than 600 birds with its avian vet care, foster home, and adoption services.

“Several bird loving organizations have banded together to declare 2014 as ‘the Year of the Pigeon,’ increasing public awareness and compassion for these overlooked and underserved birds,” says Julian Omidi, Animal Support cofounder. “MickaCoo is a unique, humane education and adoption organization that helps birds that can no longer function in the wild, but make terrific pets. We admire their effectiveness and dedication and are proud to be counted among their supporters.”

MickaCoo (http://www.pigeonrescue.org) is a network of volunteers working together to save the lives of domestic, unreleasable pigeons and doves that would otherwise be killed in shelters. Started in 2007 by Elizabeth Young, MickaCoo volunteers have saved the lives of more than 600 birds. Volunteers respond to calls from shelters, vets, and good Samaritans to provide avian vet care for ill or injured birds, long-term foster care, and place birds into qualified forever homes. MickaCoo serves the seven counties surrounding San Francisco.

At any given time, MickaCoo’s team of dedicated volunteers is generally caring for more than 100 birds. The organization rescues all types of pigeons and doves but most of its services benefit a domestic bird called a King Pigeon that is bred for eating (squab) and is sometimes mistakenly released at ceremonies or in a misguided effort to save their lives.. They are not able to survive on their own and have a life span of only hours to days in the wild.

MickaCoo is a volunteer-powered, donation-supported project of Community Initiatives, which champions and provides back-office services to unincorporated nonprofit projects. Fiscal sponsorship by Community Initiatives allows nonprofits to focus on their mission to benefit the community.

Animal Support (http://www.animalsupport.org) is dedicated to addressing pet over-population and abuse by promoting charities working on behalf of animal well-being. The organization was founded by brothers Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi to advocate for animal protection, rescue, adoption, and spay and neuter laws. Animal Support does not accept donations but encourages direct contributions of money and talents to the charities and organizations featured on our website.
