AnimalSupport.org and its co-foundersMichael Omidi, MD and Julian Omidi urge everyone who is concerned about animal welfare to join the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), an organization dedicated not only to animal rescue, but also education and influencing public policy about animal cruelty issues.
“The ASPCA is the benchmark organization for animal rights,” says Michael Omidi, co-founder of AnimalSupport.org. “The entire reason our culture has such a high degree of concern for animals and their welfare is because of the pioneering efforts of the ASPCA. We encourage anyone who owns a pet or anyone who has ever owned a pet to join the ASPCA.”
The ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org) began in the late 19th century as a means of protecting horses and other livestock from barbaric treatment by cart drivers and slaughterhouses, and preventing animal fighting and shooting for sport. Founder Henry Bergh pressed the New York State Legislature to pass anti-animal cruelty acts, and to give the ASPCA the authority to enforce them. Wherever Mr. Bergh found animals being abused by humans, he set out to prosecute the offenders—something unheard of in a time when public animal control agencies managed the stray dog population by packing them in cages and hurling them into a river.
Today, the efforts of the ASPCA have branched out all across the nation, providing aid and grants for animal sanctuaries, opening up shelters, managing animal adoption programs, rescuing abused or mistreated animals and placing animal abusers under arrest.
“Not only did the ASPCA influence public policy, it also influenced the culture,” Omidi says. “Animal abuse is no longer considered normal or even tolerable. We are thrilled to be working alongside the ASPCA since they have truly set the standard by which we hope to operate.”
AnimalSupport.org was co-founded by Julian Omidi and his brother Michael Omidi with the mission of ending animal abuse by recommending charities and organizations that fight to stop this horrific practice.
